WHAT IS MIXED MEDIA?

What is mixed media?
Does it have to include something other than paint and paper?
Does it have to have bumpy bits?  I don't like bumpy bits.

The theme at "Mix it Monthly" is "Mixed Media Flowers".
I made two.

This is the first one.
It's made from washi tape, three tiny magazine snippets, bits cut out from my own earlier artwork, painting with water-colours and metallic pens, and finally some rubber stamping.

It took ages to make.
There's something about it that's not quite right and yet I rather like it.

The second one is made from two pages from my art journals, a strip of my own designer paper (at the right side) and one of my little oil pastel and water-colour paintings.

It's all my own art but was put together with photo-editing.

Are you allowed photo-editing with Mixed Media?

Which one do you like best?

  7. Well, it I have to choose (which I know I don't really), I would have to say I like #2 the best. It's less busy and more structured for my mind to to take in all its elements and process them into a sensible scene. (You know how I am) And I love the colors too. Yet I'm closely discovering all the bits and bobs in both pieces saying to myself, ooo, look at that. Being inspired!

  8. Second one by far--so well composed and the colors are so cool ans refreshing. I do really like the movement and exuberance of the first one--like fireworks rocketing off!

  9. Each piece has its charms...but the colors and design in the second one really speak to me ♥
Your 'dancing' flowers in the first piece are really lovely too Sheila!
Your "what is mixed media?" is a very good question.
Happy beginning of the weekend to you.
I've just come in from playing in the water...it is very dry here in Virginia.
A lovely summer morning with a bit of crisp cool air until the temps climb a bit later in the day.

  10. i love both, maybe the second one a bit more because of the Colors. and where is the mixed media Police to tell us what is allowed or not;) the good Thing is we can mix up everything, bumpy or not. actually i love your pieces because they are often "hybrids" of handmade and photoedited. you master that perfectly.
have a great Weekend, sheila, weather relief is forecasted here...
hope you have a great time at the fringe or other Festivals.

  11. Beautiful art, I like the second one best, probably because the shapes appeal to me more? Both have beautiful colours as well. Take good care, Cheers, Shirleyxx

  12. I like the one in the middle with the flower in the center. It's whimsical, child like, very free.

  13. I recognize some of that washi, have it myself. I have to say I love your mix of media from collage to digital and those wonky flowers win me over. xox

  15. I like the second one best - its the colours and the layout, its lovely. My take on Mixed Media is to use different media on one project, but then again, I dont much of a stuff if thats wrong!! Laughing! Create Art and enjoy thats most important! Cxxx

  18. Wow, you have been really busy! How wonderful to find all your new artwork here! I love both of your mixed media collages because of the wonderful fairy tale colors! If you would ask me to choose one I think I would probably choose the first one. I can see a lot of lovely, secret hidden stories inside your beautiful, magic mixed-media garden! Apologize for not writing earlier but the heatwave here made me feel extremly weak and left me speechless.

  19. I love your view of mixed media and you have made 2 successful pieces. I love the fact that its not quite right, because that is what makes it quite right.

  21. Hello Sheila! I have made it back here at last!! I love these pieces, so very hard to pick between the two, I really have to say that on some days it would be the second, so cooling and full of peaceful vibes and on other days I would love the fun happy style of the first one, both are so great!

  22. Your mixed media pieces are fantastic, the first has a fresh and funny design and the second one has my favorite colours. Both are different and it's difficult to choose.
Excellent collages with beautiful colours, as always! Mar xx

  23. Any art piece involving 3 or more types of media that are not traditionally used together, it's a mixed media. I like all 3 of yours for different reasons: the first one for its simplicity; the second for its colorfulness; and the third for its fabulous patterns. Blessings!

  24. Frankly Sheila, I like them both, but I find great pleasure in the first one. It was fun seeing how you put all these disparate pieces together and made a cohesive piece of true art.

  25. Sheila, I love both of them! The middle one I find to be cheerful, and the last one I find to be soothing. They are both very pleasing to me. :)

  26. Gorgeous art work, Sheila, it's hard to choose between them, but I think the last one is the one I would pick. They are very inspiring, both of them :)

  27. Well you know me Sheila, if its not lumpy and bits sticking out I am not happy. I do love your work and am in awe of the way you mix paper, paint and digital. I think both are good examples of your working methods.

  28. Both are very nice, but my favourite is the second, because you did it in my favourite colors. ;)

  29. I like the playfullness of the first piece, and the composition of the second one. Yes, what is mixed media .... I guess there are quite a few different opinions on that. For me it's when I use more than one medium to make a painting, f.i. paint as well as collage. Not sure whether that's the right "definition" though ... ;-)

  30. I cannot pick, Sheila - I love them BOTH!!!!! You are so creative and full of talent, my friend! Thank you so much for sharing your talents with all of us! HUGS to you!!!

I want to live in this one! LOooove! http://mix-it-monthly.blogspot.de

  35. Hi Sheila, Thanks for your email. It's me who is very behind now, but I have enjoyed catching up. Visiting your blog is always such a delight, partly because our work is so different.
I love both your pieces. If I was forced to choose, it would probably be the second just because of the colours, but they are both fab!

  36. I hope I'm allowed to like both. I really don't have a favorite, but if you made me choose, I'd pick the first one.

  37. Thank you for sharing your wonderful projects with us at Mixed Media Mojo. I love both of them but I think the second one has the edge.

  38. They're all great fun, yet the simplicity of design and color in the third piece posted has a certain appeal. Merry creating!

  40. Both are cool but the 2nd ones has such lovely colors and looks middle eastern.
