NESSIE AND OTHER FRIENDLY MONSTERS

I have a new challenge up at "Soartful" where the theme is "Friendly Monsters".

I think everyone knows about the Loch Ness Monster.  A friend and I were visiting a very, very small quilt shop in a local village when my friend unearthed (it was that kind of shop) a fabric with Nessie on it.
Of course I had to make a little quiltlet with it.

THE NESSIE QUILT

I've no idea where the next creatures came from, I was painting in my tiny 4 x 4 inch sketchbook, looking for "Friendly Monster" ideas in the empty pages, when these appeared.

Which one is the Friendly Monster?  And are they really friendly? - I'm a bit worried about the one on the right.

TWO VERY STRANGE CREATURES

And here is The Fairy Snail, quite definitely a very Friendly Monster.

This was made in a technique given in a Soul Food lesson, where you drew an image, cut up little bits of text and glued them to the image, then coloured it.  It's a very relaxing and fun technique.

THE FAIRY SNAIL

The Fairy Snail has small circular feet, so he would like to be entered into the current "Art Journal Journey" challenge where the theme is "Circles".
I'm linking to "Paint Party Friday".

How about painting a Friendly Monster yourself, and linking to Soartful?
Go on, you know you want to.

  1. Oh, Sheila, your painting is very beautiful and gorgeously done, but I'm a little worried about the same on right, too ;)

  2. Yes! The quilt is wonderful, love how you got it all sewed together so neatly, with all the contrasting panels! The friendly monster on the right doesn't really look friendly, let's see how he behaves....And as I am on a snail trip just now, I find yours very endearing!
I am working on another entry for the challenge, hope to get it finished soon.
    Love, Valerie

  6. Now see, here's the trouble with society. We are too quick to judge by the cover. Just because friendly monster on the right is not what we consider beautiful, we are automatically concerned with it's temperament. Nothing mean could have such a cute and sweet blue friendly monster friend!

It's been ages since I've Nessie! Doesn't she just have the prettiest home in the Loch Ness! Fairy snail is the envy of all snails with his round feet! They are so much easier to get around on. Terrific imagination, Sheila!

Monster on the right has had a lunch which disagrees with its digestive system.

  19. All monsters such fun. What serendipity to find a fabric with Nessie on it, and she does look friendly. I think she must be because she hasn't been reported as eating anyone yet. I love the crazy mini-quilt you have made.
As for the two strange creatures, I'd feel as apprehensive as the fellow on the right if the blue monster stood so close to me - at least until I found that he was in fact just wanting to be friends.
And your little circus wannabee is so cute rolling along to a bright new future.
Sorry I've been absent for a while, hopefully I can get back to normality in a few days.

  30. Hi Sheila! Thank you for your visit on my blog!
I enjoy your little gallery of monsters a lot, but the snail is just the best and funniest of them all in my eyes! :-)

  32. Hi Sheila! The friendly snail at the bottom is amazing!! I love his coloured back-end, and all the little flowers adorning him. His shell looks more like furled wings, but even a whimsy snail would not fly, or would he? The frieze is amazing too, with the effect of the two tones being so different on the sides from the top and bottom. Lovely!

The Loch Ness monster is centred beautifully among your crazy patchwork. The monster one is quite frightening and its amazing how this is achieved with paint work and Photoshop. A very talented person you are.

But your Nessi is so cute, it´s not a monster :o))

Your both "strange creatures" are really friendly monsters and makes me smilie.

I love your way to paint and your creativity!!

  44. You quilt too? You are such a talented lady! We visited Loch Ness but Nessie was shy that day and so didn't see her, LOL! It was interesting that there were two museums quite close to each other...one pro, one con, the existence of Nessie. Our tour took us to the pro one, of course!
